Benign Skin Tumours

Benign skin tumours are common changes in the skin or subcutaneous tissue that are not cancerous. They may include moles, sebaceous cysts, lipomas, or other local skin changes.

Although these changes are benign, there may be several reasons to have them assessed or removed. They may cause discomfort from friction, tenderness, growth, cosmetic concern, or may be difficult to distinguish with certainty from other types of skin lesions.

During the consultation, the doctor will assess the appearance, location, and size of the lesion and advise whether treatment is appropriate. Depending on the type of lesion, treatment may include surgical removal under local anaesthesia. If necessary, the removed tissue will be sent for microscopic examination.

Common benign skin lesions

These may include:

• moles and other benign naevi
• sebaceous cysts / atheromas
• lipomas / fatty lumps
• fibromas and other small skin nodules
• troublesome or recurrent skin lesions

Referral from Your General Practitioner

If there is a medical indication for assessment or treatment, you may in relevant cases be referred to AGATA by your general practitioner.

When the treatment is covered through the public healthcare referral system, it may be carried out without any cost to the patient, provided that the criteria for referral and treatment are fulfilled.

If the treatment is requested for cosmetic reasons only, it will generally be self-funded.

After Treatment

After removal, you will receive information about wound care, dressings, any sutures, and follow-up. If the tissue is sent for microscopic examination, you will also be informed of the result.
