About the treatment
Chin Implant – Restoring Balance to the Facial Profile
The chin plays an important role in the overall facial profile and in the balance between the upper, middle and lower thirds of the face. When the size and projection of the chin are in harmony with the rest of the face, the profile appears more balanced and the nose is perceived in better proportion.
If the chin is small or set back, the transition between the chin and neck can appear softer and less defined. At the same time, the nose may appear more prominent, and the lower face may lose some of its balance.
At AGATA, the aim is to create better balance between the chin, nose, lips and neck, so that the profile appears more natural and harmonious.
Who may benefit from a chin implant?
A chin implant may be suitable for patients who feel that their chin is small or recessed, or when the transition between the chin and neck is less defined.
During the consultation, the facial proportions are assessed both from the front and in profile. The size and shape of the implant are selected according to the degree of missing projection and the desired chin shape, so that the result blends naturally with the rest of the face.
The procedure can be performed as a standalone operation, but it may also be combined with, for example, rhinoplasty or facelift surgery when a better overall balance of the facial profile is desired.
How is the procedure performed?
The chin implant can be inserted through a small incision in the natural crease beneath the chin. From here, the implant is positioned precisely and stabilised in the desired position. The scar usually becomes gradually less noticeable over time.
Alternatively, the implant can be inserted through an incision on the inside of the lower lip, so there is no external scar. With this approach, good oral hygiene is particularly important during the healing period.
The procedure typically takes around 1 hour and can be performed under local or general anaesthesia, depending on the extent of the surgery and whether it is combined with other procedures.
Recovery
After surgery, swelling, tightness and temporary changes in sensation around the chin or lower lip may occur.
Most patients can return to work after approximately 1 week, while more strenuous physical activity should usually wait for a few additional weeks.
The profile gradually settles, and the final result is typically assessed after around 2–3 months.
Are there risks?
All surgical procedures involve some degree of risk, but the great majority of patients have an uncomplicated recovery.
Possible risks include swelling, temporary changes in sensation, bleeding or infection. In rare cases, the implant may shift and require correction. With an external incision, scar changes may also occur.
What can you expect from the result?
The aim is not simply to create a larger chin, but to achieve a more balanced profile and a clearer relationship between the chin, jawline and neck.
The result is long-lasting, while the skin and other facial tissues will continue to change naturally with age.
