About the treatment

Neck Lift – Restoring Definition to the Jawline and Neck

The neck is often one of the first areas where signs of ageing become visible. Over time, the skin may become looser, fat may accumulate beneath the chin, and the underlying structures may lose some of their support. This can make the jawline less defined and soften the natural transition between the face and neck.

For some patients, a neck lift is sufficient as a standalone procedure. For others, the best balance is achieved by combining a neck lift with a lower facelift, so that the jawline, face and neck once again appear as a harmonious whole.

How is the procedure performed?

There are different types of neck lift, and the choice depends on factors such as skin elasticity, the amount of excess skin and the condition of the underlying structures.

Direct neck lift can be a good option when there is significant excess skin in the central part of the front of the neck that cannot be adequately corrected by redistributing the skin. In this case, the excess skin is removed directly. The scar is placed as discreetly as possible and usually becomes gradually lighter and less noticeable over time.

Extended neck lift is performed without placing a scar on the front of the neck. Through a small, discreet incision beneath the chin, the platysma muscle can be brought together in the midline to restore internal support. If there is also excess fat beneath the chin or along the neck, this can be reduced with gentle liposuction.

The skin is then redistributed upwards and backwards, and any excess skin can be removed discreetly behind the ear and along the hairline at the back of the neck. The aim is to create a more defined jawline and a soft, natural transition between the face and neck.

Recovery

After surgery, some swelling, mild bruising and a feeling of tightness in the neck are normal. A supportive bandage is typically worn for around one week, and during the first few days we recommend rest with the head slightly elevated.

The swelling gradually subsides, and the result becomes clearer over the following weeks. The final result is typically assessed after around 3 months, when the tissues have settled further into their new position.

Are there risks?

All surgical procedures involve some degree of risk, but the great majority of patients have an uncomplicated recovery.

Mild bruising, swelling and temporary changes in sensation are common during the early healing period. The wounds typically heal within the first few weeks, while the scars continue to mature over 9–12 months, gradually becoming lighter and more discreet.

What can you expect from the result?

The aim is a smoother and more defined neck profile, a clearer jawline and a more harmonious transition between the face and neck.

“The beauty of a neck lift lies not in changing the face, but in restoring the line that connects it naturally to the neck.”
