Arm Lift – Restoring the Natural Contour of the Upper Arms

After major weight loss, with ageing, or as a result of reduced skin elasticity, the skin of the upper arms may become loose and sagging. In some patients, the changes are limited to the upper arms, while in others the excess skin may extend through the armpit and towards the side of the chest.

An arm lift is designed to remove excess skin and improve the shape and proportions of the upper arms. At AGATA, treatment is planned individually, with the aim of creating a natural transition between the arm, armpit and upper body.

The Consultation

During the consultation, the amount of excess skin, skin elasticity and any localised fat deposits on the upper arms are assessed.

It is also considered whether skin reduction alone is sufficient or whether the procedure would benefit from being combined with liposuction. The position and length of the scar depend on the extent of the excess skin.

In patients with good skin elasticity and mainly localised fat deposits, liposuction alone may in some cases be sufficient without the need for skin removal.

How is the Procedure Performed?

In a standard arm lift, the scar is placed along the inner aspect of the upper arm and typically extends from the area near the elbow to the armpit.

If there is also significant excess skin around the armpit, the scar may in some cases be extended further along the back edge of the armpit and towards the side of the chest.

Liposuction may be added to reduce localised fat deposits and create a smoother contour. The excess skin is then removed and the tissues are closed in several layers.

The procedure usually takes around 2 hours. Smaller procedures may, in selected cases, be performed under local anaesthesia, while more extensive arm lift surgery may require general anaesthesia.

Recovery

After surgery, a compression dressing or compression garment is used to support the tissues and reduce swelling. Drains may be used and are typically removed within the first few days.

Swelling, tenderness and a feeling of tightness in the upper arms should be expected during the initial recovery period. Heavy lifting and strenuous use of the arms should be avoided while normal activity is gradually resumed.

What Happens to the Scars?

An arm lift leaves a visible scar along the inner aspect of the upper arm.

The scar is placed as discreetly as possible and adapted to the patient’s individual anatomy. It will initially be noticeable, but usually becomes gradually lighter and less prominent over time.

In patients with more extensive skin excess, the scar may be longer and continue through the armpit towards the side of the chest.

Are There Risks?

As with all surgery, possible risks include swelling, bleeding, infection, fluid collection, wound-healing problems, asymmetry and altered sensation.

The result is influenced by factors such as skin quality, the extent of surgery, the patient’s general health and weight stability.

What Can Be Expected from the Result?

The aim is to achieve firmer and more harmonious upper arms with less excess skin and better balance between the arms and the proportions of the upper body.

After major weight loss, an arm lift may form one stage of a broader treatment plan together with procedures such as abdominoplasty, thigh lift or upper body lift.
