Breast Implant Replacement – When the Breasts Need to Be Reassessed

Modern breast implants can last for many years, but they are not necessarily lifelong devices. At the same time, the shape of the breasts may change over the years as a result of pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight changes and the natural ageing process.

Some women therefore wish to change the size or shape of their implants, while others seek correction because of capsular contracture, leakage, asymmetry, changes in breast shape or discomfort.

At AGATA, breast implant replacement is not simply about exchanging an old implant for a new one. The aim is to reassess the breasts and create a solution that suits your current anatomy, breast tissue and wishes.

The Consultation – Reassessing the Breasts as a Whole

During the consultation, we assess the size and shape of the breasts, the position of the implants, skin quality, the thickness of the breast tissue, any asymmetry and the degree of sagging.

We then consider whether the implants should simply be replaced, or whether additional correction is needed at the same time. This may include changing the size or shape of the implant, treating the capsule around the implant, or combining the procedure with fat transfer and a breast lift.

At AGATA, the implant is selected according to the anatomy of the breast and the shape of the chest, with the aim of achieving a natural, harmonious and long-lasting result.

Does the Implant Always Need to Be Replaced with the Same Size?

No.

When implants are replaced, the breasts can be assessed afresh. Some women wish to maintain the same volume, while others prefer smaller or larger implants.

The most important consideration is not to recreate the previous solution, but to choose an implant that suits the current breast tissue and proportions.

Over time, the skin and breast tissue may become thinner or more relaxed. For this reason, it is not always appropriate to choose the same or a larger implant without also assessing how much support the tissues can provide.

Implants that are too heavy may place greater strain on the breast tissue and increase the tendency for the breasts to sag over time.

How is the Procedure Performed?

The procedure is usually performed under general anaesthesia.

The existing scar is often used to access the implant, helping to avoid additional scars wherever possible.

The old implant is removed, and the implant pocket and the capsule surrounding the implant are assessed. Depending on the findings, the capsule may be preserved, adjusted, or partially or completely removed.

The implant pocket is then adjusted if necessary, and the new implant is placed in the planned position.

If the shape of the breast has changed, the procedure can also be combined with a breast lift or fat transfer.

With fat transfer, your own fat can be used to provide additional soft-tissue coverage, soften visible or palpable implant edges, and improve minor asymmetries.

Recovery

After surgery, the breasts may feel tight and tender, and swelling and bruising may occur.

You will usually stay overnight for observation, depending on the extent of the procedure.

A supportive bra is worn after surgery. Following standard breast implant surgery, the bra is worn day and night during the initial healing period, after which its use is gradually reduced according to the surgeon’s plan.

If the procedure also includes a breast lift, capsule surgery or fat transfer, the recovery plan is tailored individually.

Are There Risks?

As with all breast surgery, there are risks.

These may include swelling, pain, bleeding, infection, asymmetry, altered sensation, capsular contracture, displacement of the implant or the need for further correction at a later stage.

A new implant, like the original implant, may also require monitoring or replacement at some point in the future.

What Can You Expect from the Result?

The aim is not simply to receive a new implant, but to create a breast shape that suits your body as it is today.

For some women, this means maintaining the same volume in a more harmonious shape. For others, it may mean a smaller or lighter implant, a breast lift, fat transfer, or a combination of several techniques.

The result develops gradually over the first few months as the swelling subsides and the implant settles into its final position.
