Breast Reduction – When Less Weight Brings More Freedom to Everyday Life

Large and heavy breasts can be associated with both physical and psychological discomfort. Their weight may cause pain in the neck and shoulders, affect posture, and lead to skin irritation or infection beneath the breasts. At the same time, breast size and shape may feel restrictive in everyday life and may affect both freedom of movement and overall wellbeing.

At AGATA, breast reduction is not simply about making the breasts smaller. The aim is to reduce weight and volume while reshaping and lifting the breasts so that they are better proportioned to the woman’s body.

The Consultation

During the consultation, the size and shape of the breasts, the degree of sagging, the quality and elasticity of the skin, the position of the nipples, and any asymmetry are assessed.

Consideration is also given to how much breast tissue should be removed in order to create a lighter and more harmonious result.

The result depends, among other factors, on skin elasticity, connective tissue quality and the composition of the breast. The treatment is therefore always planned individually, based on the patient’s anatomy, proportions and wishes.

How is the Procedure Performed?

Breast reduction is a procedure in which the volume and weight of the breasts are reduced while the breasts are simultaneously reshaped and lifted.

The nipple is repositioned to the point of greatest breast projection in a more natural position. Any existing asymmetry can also be corrected by adjusting the volume and shape between the two sides.

In most breast reductions, the scars are placed around the areola, vertically down towards the breast fold, and along the fold beneath the breast. This typically creates an anchor-shaped scar.

The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and usually takes around 2–3 hours.

The breast tissue that is removed is routinely sent for histological examination.

What is the Aim of Breast Reduction?

The aim is to create breasts that feel lighter and are better proportioned to the rest of the body.

For many women, this means less strain on the neck and shoulders, easier movement and fewer problems with the skin beneath the breasts.

At the same time, the aim is to create a more harmonious breast shape with a better balance between volume, position and symmetry.

Recovery

After surgery, the patient stays overnight in the hospital so that the first postoperative period can take place calmly and under observation.

A supportive, non-wired bra is worn for approximately 2 months.

The patient is typically up and walking within a few hours of surgery, and light activity can gradually be resumed. Around 2 weeks off work should usually be expected, depending on the nature of the patient’s work.

What Happens to the Scars?

The scars will be visible initially but usually become gradually less noticeable over time. They are permanent, and in some patients they may become more prominent or thicker.

It is recommended that the scars are protected from sun exposure and supported with surgical tape during the first few months.

Are There Risks?

Possible risks include swelling, bleeding, infection, minor wound-healing problems and altered sensation in the nipple or skin.

In most patients, sensation gradually returns towards normal, although in some cases the changes may be permanent.

The ability to breastfeed may be affected after a breast reduction, particularly following more extensive procedures.

Smoking, being overweight and certain medical conditions may also affect wound healing and increase the risk of complications.

What Can Be Expected from the Result?

The aim is to achieve lighter, better-proportioned and more harmonious breasts, with both size and shape better suited to the woman’s body.

The result is generally long-lasting, but the shape of the breasts may continue to change over time as a result of skin quality, gravity, weight changes and the natural ageing process.
