Thigh lift
“A thigh lift is not simply about removing loose skin – it is about adapting the shape of the thighs to the body that the weight loss has already created.”
About the treatment
Thigh Lift – When Loose Skin on the Thighs Needs to Be Brought Back into Balance
After major weight loss or as a result of reduced skin elasticity, the skin of the thighs may become loose and sagging, particularly along the inner thighs. For some patients, this is mainly a cosmetic concern, while others may experience discomfort during movement, skin irritation or chafing where the skin rubs together.
A thigh lift is designed to remove excess skin and improve the shape and proportions of the thighs. At AGATA, treatment is planned individually, with the aim of creating a more harmonious transition between the thighs, hips and the rest of the body.
The Consultation
During the consultation, the amount of excess skin, skin elasticity and any localised fat deposits on the thighs are assessed.
It is also considered whether skin reduction alone is sufficient or whether the procedure would benefit from being combined with liposuction. The position and length of the scar depend on the extent and location of the excess skin.
How is the Procedure Performed?
In patients with more significant skin excess, the scar is typically placed in the groin and continues down along the inner thigh. In some patients, the scar may extend further towards the knee.
Liposuction may be added to reduce localised fat deposits and improve the contour before the excess skin is removed.
The procedure is usually performed under general anaesthesia and takes around 3 hours. The patient will normally stay overnight in hospital.
Recovery
After surgery, compression garments are worn to support the tissues and reduce swelling. Drains may be used and are typically removed within the first few days.
Swelling, tenderness and a feeling of tightness in the skin should be expected during the initial recovery period. Activity is gradually increased as healing progresses.
What Happens to the Scars?
The scars following a thigh lift can be relatively long, particularly when the skin excess is extensive.
They are placed as discreetly as possible, usually within the groin crease and along the inner thigh. The scars will initially be visible, but usually become gradually lighter and less noticeable over time.
Are There Risks?
As with all surgery, possible risks include swelling, bleeding, infection, fluid collection, wound-healing problems, asymmetry and altered sensation.
The result is influenced by factors such as skin quality, the extent of surgery, the patient’s general health and weight stability.
What Can Be Expected from the Result?
The aim is to achieve firmer and more harmonious thighs with less excess skin and better balance between the thighs and the body’s overall proportions.
After major weight loss, a thigh lift may form one stage of a broader treatment plan together with procedures such as abdominoplasty, lower body lift or arm lift.
