Neck lift

A neck lift is a surgical procedure that improves visible signs of ageing in the jawline and neck - such as loose skin, a double chin or visible muscle bands (platysma). It can be performed as a direct neck lift (Z-plasty) or an indirect neck lift with incisions by the ear and/or chin.

Who is it for?

A neck lift may be relevant for excess fat and lax skin in the lower face (jowls), fat under the chin, loose neck skin or vertical muscle bands on the front of the neck. It is often combined with facelift, eyelid surgery, brow lift or fat transfer.

How it works

In a direct neck lift a Z-shaped incision is made mid-neck, and excess skin and possibly fat are removed. The operation typically takes 1–2 hours and is often done under local anaesthesia. In an indirect neck lift incisions are typically placed around the ear and possibly under the chin, tightening skin and underlying muscle without a midline neck incision.

Risks

Risks may include bleeding, infection, temporary numbness, visible scars, asymmetry, skin irritation and prolonged swelling. In patients with reduced skin elasticity the skin may again appear lax over time - sometimes with a need for a smaller tightening.

Sun protection, good skincare, a healthy lifestyle and not smoking support the result. Longevity depends on age, skin quality and any supplementary treatments.
