Breast augmentation with implants

Breast augmentation with silicone implants is surgery that increases breast volume and shapes them according to your proportions and goals. It may be relevant for underdeveloped or uneven breasts, loss of volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss – or if you want more fullness in an otherwise balanced chest.

Who is it for?

Typical candidates include women with limited breast tissue, asymmetry or deformity, women who have lost fullness after pregnancy or ageing, and women with a normal breast who want more volume. At consultation, anatomy, skin quality and goals are assessed so implant and technique are chosen realistically.

How it works

The procedure is done under general anaesthesia. Simple implant placement typically takes about one hour; combined with a breast lift it may take up to about 3 hours. Incisions are most often in the fold under the breast, at the areola edge or in the armpit. The implant is placed under or in front of the pectoral muscle as agreed. Tissue is closed in layers and a drain may be used. Afterwards a supportive bra is worn for several weeks, and sleeping on your back is recommended for the first two weeks.

Risks

Risks may include swelling, pain, bleeding, infection, capsular contracture, nipple sensation changes, asymmetry and – rarely – later exchange. Implants typically last many years but are not lifelong. Possible complications are reviewed thoroughly at consultation.

Recovery and maintenance

Most people resume lighter activities after 1–2 weeks. A supportive bra is typically worn day and night for about 8 weeks and then daytime as advised. Avoid underwired bras for the first months. Stable weight, not smoking and sun protection of scars support the result.
