Prominent ear correction (otoplasty)

Prominent ears are common. The ear reaches full size early, and protruding ears can affect self-image. Otoplasty brings the ears closer to the head. The surgeon assesses individually whether surgery is indicated and what difference it can make.

The operation

After marking on the ear cartilage, a small part of the cartilage may be adjusted or removed so the ear sits in a more natural position. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia and typically takes 1–2 hours. Afterwards the ear is protected with a compressive dressing for about 1 week, then a headband for about 2 further weeks.

Risks

Risks may include bleeding in the first day, pain (rarely due to haematoma), infection, thickened scars behind the ear, recurrence of prominence, and in rare cases persistent pain.

Result

After a successful otoplasty the result is typically lifelong.
