Breast implant exchange

Breast implants are not lifelong. Average time to exchange is about 10–15 years, but many keep them longer without issues. Exchange is relevant for complications, changed size/shape goals, or when older implants need updating – optionally as hybrid with a smaller implant plus your own fat.

Who is it for?

Relevant for swelling, asymmetry, malposition, capsule hardening, leakage, desire for another size/profile, need for a lift, or changing implant type. If you are satisfied without symptoms, routine exchange is not always required.

How it works

Simple exchange typically takes about 1 hour. With capsule, leakage, lift or hybrid it may take 3–4 hours. The fold scar is often reused. The pocket is adjusted, new implants placed and tissue closed in layers. Under- or over-muscle placement is assessed individually.

Risks

Risks are similar to primary augmentation: bleeding, infection, capsular contracture, asymmetry and anaesthetic reactions. With rupture, MRI may be needed before surgery.

Recovery and maintenance

Recovery resembles augmentation with a supportive bra and limited activity for weeks. The next exchange interval is planned from implant type, age and clinical status.
